We participated in the Flaming Lips contest for Look… The Sun is Rising!

There are some wonderfully creative entries to the contest, at present they’re counting 117! I highly recommend you have a look at them, it’s quite fascinating to see the different ideas this song has generated.

I had this idea in mind as soon as I saw the contest and heard the song. I wanted to show a transition from a calm and serene atmosphere to weird distorted imagery… and all that with the simplest method I could think of. Thanks to Jesse Lincoln who was willing to lend his face to the video. It was a bit of a back and forth who would be the protagonist in it, as someone else had to cancel, but I think it all worked out in the end.

It was a nice experience creating this. I had to do it all in a very short time (less than a week, in fact), but it was definitely a nice change compared to some other personal projects. As it might become apparent I’ve been rather interested in glitch art and the power of close-ups. I was a bit mesmerized while editing this and seeing one strong facial expression after another. My current personal video projects feel a bit more like painting than editing, really. The beauty of it is to discover how to create a mood and an intuitive narrative, rather than a clear linear structure. It’s more about a feeling experience than rational perception. In the end now, I still wish I could have taken more time for this, but you always want to do better next time, right?

Majestic – in progress

I started working on a new music video. This one’s for the Sabre Siren and their song Majestic. It’s been quite a while since I filmed myself on one hand, and on the other in a proper studio. Again this one was another challenge, we only had a few hours to set up and film. There are a few things I’m not very experienced yet with, eg. lighting, but so far the footage looks good and I enjoy working on this. Getting the final video done might take a while. This is another chance for me to experiment, this time with effects. I’m also using this project for my dissertation experiments in algorithmic music video editing, so that should be interesting. Here are a few stills:

Finally it is done. I have been working on the video for Ghost Audio‘s Fugitive Song for almost a year. A lot has happened, life has taken its crazy turns and several things prevented me from completing this in the timeframe I had in mind, but in the end I’m glad. I took a lot of inspiration from different sources and I had the chance to experiment and learn a lot.

My next projects are going to be live-action and effects based, I won’t be doing animation like this for another while. I’m really looking forward to exploring more and doing different things.

In the meanwhile I hope you enjoy the final result.

I had the opportunity to work with the media production team at Griffith Information Services again on the new Snapshot video. If you’re interested please have a look at the intro for last years Snapshot.

IT and Griffith’s technological future were central concepts in this Snapshot video and therefore we chose the visual aesthetic accordingly. It was a nice challenge and a lot of fun to work on this. All of the graphics and animation were created in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Apple Motion, as well as a little bit that was done in Camtasia. Here are a few sample videos:

I have returned to Brisbane and already had the great pleasure of working with the team from Griffith INS again. This is a little promo for StudentJobs@Griffith for which I did the graphics. This time around I worked with Motion 5 which was a nice change. Already working on the next project now which should be interesting. We’re going for a very different style this time and I really enjoy exploring some new techniques.
